“I’d imagine the whole world was one big machine. Machines never come with any extra parts, you know. They always come with the exact amount they need. So I figured, if the entire world was one big machine, I couldn’t be an extra part. I had to be here for some reason. And that means you have to be here for some reason, too.”
“Mmm..! M-maybe you should i-invest some time into finding a-a place you l-like..!” She was really enthusiastic about it now. It sounded like such a good idea! Especially since it’d be an ideal position for someone like her. Well, near ideal. A much quieter place would probably work for starters.
//Oh, I will certainly try.// he seemed to laugh again.
“A-are they nice…?” she wondered, never having set foot in one before. Her experience with food establishments relied solely on some low-brow restaurants and fast-food joints.
//Oh, I’m sure they are plenty friendly.//
“O-oh..! Oh dear….. W-well….m-maybe n-not at the e-end of the universe..th-then….”
People knew how to get to the end of the universe? Maybe his friend was a space man. That or it wasn’t as far away - or illogical - as she may have thought.
“Well…wh-where might y-you want to work….? Wh-what…kind of environment d-do you like…?”
//I’m not quite sure. Somewhere quiet, maybe. Like a diner.//
“O-oh…! G-good…! Good….th-that’s good….” It was a start, something better than nothing. Marie pondered on the possibilities to occupy his time. “M-maybe…y-you could get a job…a-at a r-restaurant….o-or….hmmm….”
What else was there? There were amazing ways to utilize a talent, especially in this day and age. Really, he could’ve used his abilities in any way he wanted. All he was probably lacking was that beautiful passion most chiefs used to launch their dreams to bigger and better places and taste buds. Still, he had potential.
//Restaurant? I had a friend who worked at one. At the end of the Universe. He found it rather tiring to continue to watch the universe blow up every night.//
//… Y… You…. do. .. wh-what?//
“W-well….” she started, lightly holding to her chin in thought. “Couldn’t….y-you find a n-new…..p-purpose…? G-give yourself…s-s-something t-to do…?”
Or maybe that was a silly thought. Robots were limited creatures, after all. Programing must’ve been a difficult thing to change. Still, she couldn’t help but wonder if maybe, if James could learn, could he learn to self-teach? Could he pick up on being self-sufficient? There were always so many questions linking themselves to him and his nature.
//I suppose I could, yes. I do like to cook. For other people, I mean.//
//So I’m back to normal.//
